A Sister in Zion

A Child’s Innocence

Where did that little girl go? The one who flew above the clouds and danced among the stars. The one who walked a tightrope in the morning and swam with mermaids in the afternoon?

Where did that little girl go? The one who chased butterflies and stomped in rain puddles. The one who built castles in the trees and danced on Broadway.

Where did that little girl go? The one who could bend the world to her command with the word “please”. The one who could turn a bath into the Lost City of Atlantis.

Why did that little girl change?

Was it the boys pulling her hair and laughing at her freckles? Was it the names and words flung at her as she held onto a belief that Santa is still real?

Or was it the flashing lights and erotic billboards that snarled their teeth and dragged her from her bed.

Was it her friends who told her she was stupid for her dreams? Or her teachers who told her to think inside the box?

Maybe it’s the rules of the world. Dress this way and think that. Don’t be that way but act like this.

Where did that little girl go? The one with diamonds in her eyes and a fairy godmother to whisk her away in a pumpkin carriage?
